Parents & Families Weekend Frequently Asked Questions

Posted almost 8 years ago  in University Park News.
When does registration begin?
  • Online registration will open in late August. We will send an email with a link to the registration site. If you are not receiving emails from the Parent & Family Experience, please visit www.psu.campusesp.com to set up your profile.
  • We will also have a registration link posted on this page.

  • How much does it cost to register?
  • There is no fee to register for Parents & Families Weekend.
  • Most events are free and don’t require a ticket, however ticketed events can sell out quickly. For events that require a ticket purchase, you will need to follow their ticketing process in order to purchase tickets. These include the Beaver Stadium Tours, a Parents and Families Picnic Lunch, theater events, and some athletic events. When you register for the weekend, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to purchase these tickets. Please remember that these tickets sell out very quickly so you will want to purchase them as soon as you are able.

  • We registered for Parents Weekend, but our plans have changed. How do we cancel our registration?
  • It’s not necessary to notify us with your change of plans. However, if you have registered for an event that requires an RSVP or ticket purchase, you should contact the coordinating office directly. If you need their contact information, you may email parents@psu.edu to request this information.

  • What happens during Parents & Families Weekend?
  • With over 90 events held, planning your visit is key. Events will be added to this website throughout the summer. Just click on the "Schedule of Events" link under the "Parents and Families Weekend" tab at the top of the page.
  • Favorite events include: United in Song: An Acapella Concert, Pumpkin Festival at the Arboretum, Campus Bus Tours, Beaver Stadium Tours, Old Main Open House, Housing Fair, Astronight, academic college events, and so much more.

  • When is the best time to arrive?
  • The Old Main Open House is the first event held on Friday at 2:00pm.
  • Check in for Parents & Families Weekend opens on Friday at 11:00am in the HUB-Robeson Center. The check in table is also open on Saturday and Sunday. Check back later in the summer for table hours.

  • Do I have to check in?
  • No, but we recommend doing so. We will have printed event schedules, campus maps, event updates, and other handouts available throughout the weekend.

  • Will my student have classes on Friday?
  • Yes, the University does not cancel classes for Parents & Families Weekend. However, you are welcome to enjoy any scheduled activity while they are in class.

  • Should we bring other family members?
  • Everyone is welcome. Family-friendly events will be marked with a paw print on the schedule. This will help you select activities that may be enjoyable and appropriate for younger children.Keep in mind that Penn State is a large campus and you will be doing a lot of walking.

  • Why isn’t there a home football game?
  • There would not be enough lodging and accommodations for both families and football fans. This year we will be cheering on Lady Lion Volleyball in Rec Hall on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

  • I can’t find a hotel. What should I do?
  • On busy weekend such as Parents and Families Weekend, football games, and graduation many, if not all, of our local hotels sell out. If you do not have a place to stay, you may want to think outside the box (outside of State College). Bellefonte, Lewistown, and Altoona are within 15-45 minutes from campus. There are also several non-traditional options in the area including Airbnb, StateCations, and Rent Like a Champion that offer private homes for rent. The Central PA Visitor’s Bureau may be helpful in finding a place for your family.

  • Where can we eat during Parents & Families Weekend?
  • We recommend planning at least one meal in your student’s dining commons. Penn State offers a $7 all-you-care-to-eat buffet in many residence hall locations throughout the weekend.
  • A Parents and Families picnic luncheon will be held on Saturday from 11:30 - 1:30 at the HUB-Robeson Center (in the center of campus). More information to be provided soon.
  • Downtown State College (within walking distance) and the surrounding areas offer a wide variety of wonderful restaurants.
  • You won’t want to leave without getting ice cream at the Penn State Berkey Creamery (located on campus along Curtain Road in the Food Sciences Buidlng).

  • Where can we park?
  • Parking will be available on-campus and details will be announced closer to the event.

  • What if I have additional questions?
  • Please contact the Parents Program office at parents@psu.edu or 814-863-1313.

  • Is there a Parents and Families Weekend App?
  • Yes, download the Penn State LIFE app. The schedule will be posted in late September.

  • Do you have dates set for 2018?
    Yes, October 19 - 21, 2018
