Hi Cyndy. I looked at the bill for my daughter today and housing was reduced by $75 and dining by $28. Is this the "prorating" that you were alluding to? While I understand not reducing tuition, I expected the reduction in room and board to be much more significant than this given the delay in opening campus.
Barbara - According to this news article, the cost of a standard double room went down by $673 and a mid-level meal plan went doen by $284. https://news.psu.edu/story/643474/2021/01/06/adm...
These numbers could be slightly different depending on the campus, the type of housing (renovated or not, etc.), and the meal plan level. THe amount you shared seems low and might warrant a phone call to the Housing office at 814-865-7501 or assignmentoffice@psu.edu.
Thanks you Cyndy. I will check and appreciate your quick response.
I just spoke with our Housing office to better understand the process. The fall numbers on our website are the revised/pro-rated numbers from the fall semester (August - November 20), so those numbers do not include the entire semester. I now have the chart with the orginal room charges (they are actually the same as the spring 2020 rates). For University Park: If your student is in a traditional, non-renovated double room, the charges would look like this: Fall 2020 (full semester with no remote learning) - $3,427; Fall 2020 (revised for November 20 departure from campus) - $2,820; Spring 2021 (revised: from mid-February to the first week of May) - $2,754. So the Spring 2021 rate reduction was taken from the Fall 2020 original rates and represent a savings of $673. This may differ slightly depending on your student's type of housing (traditional, renovated, etc.). I hope this helps to better explain our processes.
Housing and meal plans will be prorated for the spring spemester. The new rate will be reflected on the January tuition bill which is scheduled to go out on January 7.
If your student's classes are being taught in a different format than originally scheduled, they should reach out to their faculty to ask why. They could also ask their academic adviser or the department head. If you have additional details, I would be happy to assist. Please email me at parents@psu.edu.
Thanks, Cyndy
