In response to an intense storm in the State College area on Tuesday evening and local power outages, the following information regarding resources and support was shared with your student.
Dear Penn State Students,
At Penn State, your safety and well-being are our highest priorities. We know that many of you are continuing to experience a power outage as a result of yesterday's severe thunderstorms. While the vast majority of campus is fully functioning, many facilities off-campus still do not have electricity.
Unless you have heard directly from your instructor, classes are being held as scheduled. Please coordinate directly with your instructor if you must miss class or are having issues charging devices needed for class.
It's important that you prioritize your well-being during this time, and the University has resources available to help. If you are currently facing a housing-related issue—such as a loss of power, heating, or water, or a living space that is no longer safe—please do not hesitate to use the following resources:
- Student Care and Advocacy: A central point of contact for students facing unexpected challenges. Their case managers will work with you to explore resources available to ensure you have access to basic needs like housing, food, and utilities. Complete the Basic Needs Request Form. You may also visit studentcare.psu.edu or email studentcare@psu.edu.
- Campus Recreation facilities are open for all students to access shower facilities.
- HUB-Robeson Center is a 24/7 facility that is safe and powered for students.
- Student Legal Services: Free legal assistance for eligible students with housing disputes, landlord issues, and more. Visit studentlegal.psu.edu or call 814-867-4388.
- Lion’s Pantry: Provides food and hygiene supplies for students experiencing basic needs insecurity. More information is available at lionspantry.psu.edu.
- Library: Penn State WiFi is available for use on campus, including Pattee and Paterno libraries.
- Centre Helps: A 24/7 local crisis support resource that assists with emergency housing, food, and mental health services. Visit centrehelps.org or call 814-237-5855.
- Housing and Food Services will offer the campus community a $10 all you care to eat option for lunch and dinner at any dining hall, excluding the HUB-Robeson Center eateries.
We understand that these issues can impact not only your housing situation, but also your academic and emotional well-being. If you need additional support, please remember that Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is available at 814-863-0395, and emergency services are accessible at 1-877-229-6400 after hours
No student should face difficult circumstances alone. Thank you for continuing to look out for yourselves and one another.
Stay safe and take care.
